Peggie Scott:來自於美國洛杉磯,藝術與視覺設計學士。1986年畢業於全球排名第二、亦是高科技和高等研究的先驅領導大學--麻省理工學院,也於世界知名的媒體實驗室(Media Lab)擔任助教。

大學期間,Peggie鑽研於與工程學相關的研究計畫。為了將工程學艱澀的概念用簡單的方式說明給大眾媒體及學校的參訪團體瞭解,開始有了「練習教學」的機會,對於教學方法以及學習方式很感興趣。畢業後,Peggie從事於科學教育,但是學生們的學習不再只是聽老師講課,而是從實驗中學科學,因此這種「從做中學」的教學態度,成了Peggie日後英語授課的哲學理念 ,她的英語課程轉而活潑且生活化。來到台灣前,曾經參加NPO/NGO組織輔導學生進行科學實驗,也在中國大陸有兩年大專程度的英語教學經驗。來到台灣後,Peggie希望能夠瞭解更多中國的文化以及歷史。

從青草湖社區大學擔任教師一職中,她找到了另一種教書與學習的樂趣。尤其在社大夥伴耐心的協助以及陌生人友善的關懷下,Peggie聽到了好多不同的故事。很多學生甚至成了她的老師和朋友,彼此分享、一起成長,她好喜歡這個充滿活力的台灣、充滿熱情的社區。未來,在教導大家英語的同時,她也希望夠更深入瞭解每一個學員,繼續從每個班級中學習。

Peggie的幽默總是帶給大家歡笑,讓原本生硬的英語課程變得活潑有趣;而Peggie的耐心讓害怕開口說英語的台灣人在沒有壓力的學習下,一點一滴累積英語的口說能力 ;Peggie的親和力,更創造出另一種英語的學習環境:利用簡單的語句分享彼此生活中的經驗。因此除了老師與學生的角色外,更多了一份朋友的關心。

I graduated from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in 1986 with a BS in Art and Visual Design. While in college I became interested in teaching methods and learning styles. Working with a research project gave me the opportunity to "practice teach" when it became my responsibility to translate engineering concepts into layman's terms for the media and visiting school groups. After graduation I went into the field of alternative science education where students learn science by doing. Rather than being just a passive listener they perform the experiments themselves. This is the philosophy I bring to the study of English.

I taught college level English for two years in Mainland China before coming to Taiwan. And now it is my very good fortune to be a teacher here at the Bamboo Community University.

I came to Taiwan hoping to learn more about the Chinese culture and history. And I have found that, at the CU, many of the students have become my teachers and my friends. Now, with the help, patience, and stories from my CU friends and from the kindness of strangers, Taiwan is coming alive for me. I hope to continue learning in every class I'm privileged to teach.

背景

英語是一個溝通的工具。當兩個人沒有共通語言時,簡單的用英文說和聽是很實用的,就算看似簡單的問句與答句也可以讓彼此在短時間內有個基本的認知,甚至引發瞭解彼此的興趣。

English is a tool for communications. Simple speaking and listening skills in English can often be used when two people do not have a common native tongue.

理念

中階英語會話課程理念在教導大家簡單的句子以及生活中常用到的會話,課程內容透過問與答的教學方式,從中累積學員的英語口說能力。本著Peggie 「從做中學習」的教學方式,這門課程將會非常生活化,課程內容會從學員個人的生活出發,包括我們的生活環境、家庭、每天的活動、生活經驗等等,大家可以盡情的發揮、愉快的分享任何事物。

然而一個簡單的對話中也包含著基本的文法,因此,本課程會教導大家英文與中文文法使用上的不同,像是動詞、介系詞、形容詞的基本使用方法,並且於發表個人想法與意見時,同時注意英語發音的正確性。

The goal of the Beginning Conversational English course is to teach the simple phrases and conversations of everyday life. The focus is to develop a toolbox of useful spoken English. Pronunciation and grammar will be also be developed.

特色

這是一個初級的英語課程,授課步調也會放得比較緩慢。單字及片語的使用會不斷重複以確保學員對於課程內容的吸收與瞭解。我們使用的英語教課書相當不錯,可以讓學員在沒有壓力的 學習下閱讀英文。這門課程將會配合下列兩種不同形式的教學:

  • 個人化的學習:聽與說。在這段時間內,我們將會練習回答問題與問問題,也會強調發音的正確性。
  • 團體學習:學員將會被分配成小組來練習,加強他們的單字和片語。

這堂課也會由英文口說程度較高的社大志工在一旁做課程助教,協助Peggie老師指導大家的學習。

This is a beginning course and will have a leisurely pace. Vocabulary and phrases will be repeated often to insure they're being learned and understood. Because we will be using an English textbook it is best that the student have a basic comfort level with reading English. We will work in two different formats during the class:

  • Individual listening and speaking. During this time we will practice responding to and asking questions. We will also work on pronunciation.
  • Group dynamics. The students will work in groups and teams to practice and reinforce their new vocabulary and phrases.

This class will be aided by some of Bamboo CU's Senior Volunteers who have a high level of English speaking ability and will be class assistants.

課程對象

學員將會上台做英語演說、以及學習英語基礎課程,經過18週的學習後,學員將會有基本的英語閱讀能力。這門課程除了課堂學習外,也會鼓勵學員在平日生活中找到練習英文的方法。

The students will have had some exposure to or elementary lessons in English. They will also have at least a basic level of reading skill. The students will be encouraged to find ways to practice English outside of class.

  • 課程進行方式與教學目標:這門課程將會以較為緩慢的步調給予學員學習英文,確保學員能在沒有壓力的情況下學習,相信經過18週不間斷的課程學習,將使大家慢慢累積簡單的英語能力。
  • The class will be at a pace that will be slow enough to make sure that each student is comfortable with the lesson before moving on in the book. However the students will need to attend each class to keep up with the class. The class will be graded on the following factors:
    • Quizzes and final exam.
    • Attendance and participation.
    • If the students chose to buy the book they will only need to buy Side by Side.
  • 評鑑方式:本科目為三學分課程,依出席率及學習態度等整體評量學員之學習狀況,給予「優良」、「通過」或「不通過」之評定。
